Week Four - Uncover the Bedrock of Your Art

The word ‘bedrock’ is defined as: “the fundamental principles on which something is based. synonyms: core, basics, base, foundation, roots, heart, backbone, essence.”

I believe we create from one of two places: a place of hope or lack thereof. In other words, your art stems from the desire to communicate your hope or your search for it.

Be relentless in the pursuit of what gives you hope. I mean that in the figurative and literal sense.

Step One:

For me, my hope stems figuratively from my relationship with Jesus Christ. My life verse is: “I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” -Galatians 2:20

Because I understand I am fully loved and known by my Creator--not based on performance but on Christ’s finished work on the cross--I operate from a bedrock of purpose and hope.

Everything I create is based on that truth. I can find meaning in my life regardless of circumstances because I know my Father never works with out purpose.

Just For You:

Step Two:

Literally, this translates to knowing what brings me delight.

Sunlight. Embracing a loved one. Tender, quiet sunsets. Warm drinks in cozy mug. Baking. Steam rising from a hot meal.

Once you’re in the habit of listing these things, your days become scavenger hunts. Your pen and camera become tools to unearth them. You

What delights you?
